Dear colleagues,
After seven months, what began as temporary has become routine. We “mask up” to go to work, refrain from hugs and handshakes with friends and remain six feet apart without even thinking about it. But isolation is not natural for social creatures like us. It wears on our minds, bodies and spirits.
On the front lines, case managers are all too aware of the human toll taken by COVID-19. Beyond the infection and mortality statistics are the isolation-related increases in mental health issues, suicides, drug abuse and domestic violence. Job losses, financial strain and decreased access to preventive health services also factor into the human stories case managers hear each day.
The Commission has twice surveyed case managers to learn about challenges you face that are unique to this pandemic. While most are back to work, of those that responded one in five has suffered a loss or reduction in income. Too many are stressed in their work environments; some are simply exhausted from the strain. Nearly 13% cite mental health problems and 11% are experiencing clinical health issues. We hear your frustration when you can’t visit elderly loved ones, struggle to juggle your children’s needs with your workload, and just plain miss the normal rhythm of vacation travel and evenings with friends.
You need respite—a chance to push the pause button. To stop and catch your breath, then exhale slowly.
In a small way, we’re here to help you do just that, with free tools to refresh and renew CCMs.
