Prosthetics: Maximizing Functional Potential

Course Provider
Learning Objectives
Recognize some of the methods prosthetists use to objectively quantify functional potential of an injured worker with an amputation. This will allow them to know what questions to ask of the providers to make sure the medical justification is sufficient to support the recommended device.
Identify the differences between various prostheses and how the different characteristics help amputees reach their functional potential. They will understand the contraindications of some designs to help guide them in making the decision of what may or may not be appropriate.
Discuss the importance of the socket design and fit in decreasing the rate of rejection for a prosthesis. They will understand the necessity of the proper fit in order to maintain control, stability and function in the prosthesis.
Recognize the impact of physical therapy and occupational therapy on the overall success of the patient with the prosthesis. They will be able to recognize when additional training is necessary vs. when a replacement prosthesis is required.
