ETHICAL ISSUES: Appreciating the Impact on Case Managers & Ways of Taking Care

Ethics is a cornerstone of professional case management practice. Case managers often face complex and challenging situations involving multiple stakeholders, including clients, families, health care providers, and insurance companies. In these situations, a strong foundation in ethical principles is crucial for making decisions that are in the best interest of the client and that align with professional standards. This webinar will help case managers better understand best practices and ethical guidelines, and provide them with the tools they need to navigate difficult situations with confidence.

This webinar will present ethical issues that case managers confront in their practice, engaging them through a case study that provides them with both an ethical lens for assessment and ways of mitigating the harms of ethical conflicts.  By appreciating the impact for health care professionals, whether it is moral distress or burnout one can explore their potential for ethical agency and the ethics of care.  Understanding the moral community of mutual responsibility and obligations, positions case managers as advocates and helps to create an ethical environment.  The ethical practice of self-care goes beyond good physical and mental health habits, expanding to valuing the meaning of one’s work, understanding moral resiliency, the power of connection, creativity, and the feeling of hope as one cares for others.  This webinar translates the concepts of principle-based ethics into skillful recognition of how ethical practice can create a responsiveness that leads to better engagement and effectiveness.

The Commission was an early member of the NAM Action Collaborative, which has since evolved into the NAM Change Maker Campaign for Health Workforce Well-Being. As part of the Commission’s alignment with this initiative, this webinar is one of many resources developed to help case managers practice self-care and resilience habits that will help them thrive.
