CCMC 2017 New World Symposium boosts workforce expertise
Commission for Case Manager Certification event set for Jan. 26-28 in Dallas

MOUNT LAUREL, NJ, June 30, 2016—Demand is high for qualified health care case managers to coordinate and guide patients with complex needs. The Commission for Case Manager Certification leads the drive to prepare highly-skilled, knowledgeable case managers. Case management expertise for the future is the central theme of the 2017 New World Symposium, to be held Jan. 26-28, 2017, at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Dallas.

The CCMC New World Symposium will convene health care leaders including academic researchers, policymakers, managers and professional case managers to address the case manager workforce gap. The situation is a perfect storm in the making: the convergence of an aging population with multiple chronic conditions, a shrinking health care workforce, and a care system requiring greater coordination to address patients’ physical, social, emotional and financial needs.

“This is a future-oriented event,” said Jane Harkey, RN-BC, MSW, CCM and commission chair. “We curate the Symposium agenda and select speakers with keen intent—not only to meet the education needs of top case managers, but also to ignite dialogue about the challenges and opportunities we face. The Symposium builds the case management community with likeminded leaders and advocates.”

New care delivery models, demands to reduce unnecessary hospital readmissions, and regulation contribute to a rapidly changing health care landscape. More than 40,000 case managers have already demonstrated their qualifications through board certification with the Commission, but ongoing workforce development is needed to meet future demand.

Developing case management expertise for the future will be the focus of five Symposium plenary sessions and a dozen general sessions designed to inspire, educate and enlighten attendees. Plenary speakers include Michael L. Millenson, three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee, president of Health Quality Advisors and author of the critically acclaimed book, Demanding Medical Excellence: Doctors and Accountability in the Information Age. Artist, author and noted speaker Jason Kotecki will use humor and storytelling in a Symposium plenary session to address the need for case managers to restore balance, beat burnout, and become more innovative, passionate and productive.

A robust slate of speakers for the general sessions will cover a range of topics, from integrated behavioral and physical health models to motivating clients and managing ethical dilemmas. Three pre-conference workshops—each four hours in length—bring intense focus to the opioid and heroin crisis, current workers’ compensation issues and professional development topics. A selection of speakers is highlighted on the Symposium website, symposium.ccmcertification.org.

“Case managers play a pivotal role on the health care team with patients, caregivers and providers,” said Patrice Sminkey, the Commission’s CEO. “The Symposium is designed to refresh and energize professional case managers—whether new to their careers or seasoned veterans—in settings across the health continuum. Attendees will walk away with real-world solutions they can apply immediately. It’s how the Commission nurtures and invigorates well-prepared, highly skilled professional case managers.”
