FEATURED SPEAKER

Liz Helms
President and CEO
California Chronic Care Coalition (CCCC)
Author: Healthcare Unhinged, The Making of An Advocate

Liz Helms is president and CEO of the California Chronic Care Coalition (CCCC), an alliance of non-profit, social consumer and provider organizations united to improve the health of Californians with chronic conditions or diseases. She co-founded the Chronic Care Policy Alliance (CCPA), working across state lines to ensure access to affordable, quality health care and giving states a voice for the enforcement of anti-discrimination laws in the ACA.
Helms has been a leader within the patient’s rights movement since her recovery from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) in the mid-1990s. Helms’s book, Healthcare Unhinged, The Making Of An Advocate, reflects her personal journey into advocacy.
Her commitment to coalition building, grassroots advocacy, strategic planning and policy development helped shepherd many broad-based, first-of-its-kind patient rights laws in California. She was instrumental in bringing the clinical pharmacist on the care team to the Right Care Initiative, which won her the Michelotti Public Health Prize from the California Pharmacy Foundation.

In addition to her CCCC leadership roles, Helms has been a catalyst within the chronic disease community, working with the California administration’s health policy division on health care reform, including implementation of prevention, wellness and coordination of care. She serves on many state and national advisory committees and is a member of the California Right Care Initiative. Recently she was elected to a national Alliance of Integrated Medication Management board, and in 2018 joined as an advisor to the National Quality Foundation’s Measure Incubator.

ABOUT THE WEBINAR

Decisions by federal and state policymakers affect how consumers buy health coverage and their ability to access care. Those with chronic conditions and complex care needs have much at stake when laws and regulations change, and many advocates are concerned about how rollback of the ACA—in part or as a whole—may impact access to care. This webinar will examine how case managers can help consumers navigate the new terrain.

After the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how regulations can enable consumer access or create barriers to care
  • Identify trends in health care coverage or prescription benefit design that can result in barriers to care for those with chronic conditions; and
  • Communicate as an advocate for clients by educating them on their rights as patients, consumers and citizens through My Patient Rights portal.
