Role & Functions Study Key Findings

The most significant research administered by CCMC is the Role & Functions Study. This is an evidence-based study of the knowledge, skills and activities case managers are performing in the field. CCMC validates and improves the CCM® certification exam with data from this study to ensure it is reflective of the current state of case management as a practice.

The 2009 CCMC Role & Functions Study identified a number of key findings for case management, including:

  • Blending of Roles - "Need to Know More about Everything and Anything"
  • Increased Visibility and Accountability in Case Management
  • Increased Need for Advocacy and Balancing Competing Interests.
  • Increased Need for Case Managers to "Do More with Less" - Increase in Case Loads, Work Load, Limitation of Resources
  • Increased Focus on Health Outcomes, Cost-effectiveness and Value
  • More Evidenced-based Care
  • More Activity in Wellness, Prevention and Chronic Disease Management
  • More Use of Technology in Case Management: Electronic Health Records, Predictive Modeling Tools and Internet based Education and Communication Tools
  • Greater Emphasis on Client Centered Care: Cultural Sensitivity, Psychosocial Aspects, Medical Home
  • Greater Emphasis on Continuity across Transitions of Care and Collaboration across Care Settings
  • Government to Play Greater Role through Regulatory Compliance

Today’s case manager plays a leading role in the rapidly changing health care environment. The key findings identified by CCMC’s study demonstrate that certified case managers are critical in the definition of care coordination and ensure the delivery of competent case management by licensed professionals. Certified case managers are poised as leaders in health care reform legislation in addressing consumer protection and improved health outcomes.
