Ethics in palliative care: Patients and families who "want everything"
Live Webinar, March 19, 2019
1 to 2 p.m. ET

FEATURED SPEAKER
Dr. Robert Macauley
Cambia Health Foundation Endowed Chair in Pediatric Palliative Care at Oregon Health and Science University
Author: Ethics in Palliative Care: A Complete Guide

Palliative care is designed to relieve patient suffering by managing the symptoms and side effects of life-ending and chronic illness. It also is an area ripe for ethical dilemmas. Case managers are positioned to help clients understand the option of palliative care in the context of their personal preferences, so patients and their caregivers have earlier and better conversations about personal goals and values. This webinar will address compassionately communicating the value of palliative care and dive into ethical responses to common dilemmas.

Learning outcomes:

  • Develop an approach to discuss goals of care, which may include palliative measures, so patients and their families can plan ahead when facing a serious diagnosis;
  • Describe an ethically appropriate response to an ethical scenario where patients and/or families have expressed interest in palliative care but then request potentially non-beneficial (and conflicting) treatment; and
  • Incorporate advocacy on behalf of clients and their palliative care preferences in interaction with providers and caregivers.
